school

It’s been so long since I’ve blogged that I almost forgot my password to WordPress. When the end of the semester creeps up on ya, blogging is the first thing to go. I finished spring semester last Wednesday. And I only have one semester left. It feels soooo good to say (write) that. I only have three classes left that I need for my degree program, but for kicks and giggles I’m also taking Constitutional Law. I thought about taking a class like Basket Weaving, or Flower Arrangement (both offered by my university) but figured this would give me a pre-taste of law school.

Speaking of law school, that is my last bit of anxiety for the summer. I take the LSAT early in June and today is the start of my self-induced study time. After I receive my score, I’ll be able to pick which law schools to apply at. I have two front runners right now, but I don’t care to jinx myself, so I’ll be keeping those to myself until after the test. Big J is taking his finals this week. Meanwhile I get to stay up late and watch movies and sleep in.

Not too much that is new and exciting around here. We’re going with some friends and their little ones to the lake for Memorial Day to go on a local camping trip. Little J starts T-ball this summer. We’re going to try and plan a biking trip on a trail this summer (like a week long trip or longer). And my big goal for June is to have a yard sale. I wanted to last summer, but because I was in school it just wasn’t happening. Well, I’m off to observe study hours.

It’s just monkey and me this weekend; Daddy had to work. Friday I took Jr. bowling at my school and he had a blast. Before we went bowling, though, I let him use his ice cream chalk on the sidewalks. I thought these shots were incredible. Jr. is growing up too fast, he looks more boy than baby here:

Well I just submitted my first ‘work’ for my Advanced Fiction class electronically. Normally I’m a pretty confident writer. And I think what I’ve managed so far is adequate . . . but this is a class taught by someone I both respect and find intimidating. It started out as a short story but ended up being the first chapter of a novel. (That sounds too ambitious to me: a novel.) I just couldn’t chop off the heads of all my little ideas to force it into the form of a short story. (And I was nearing deadline.) Sheesh. I’m not looking foward to my turn at workshop.

Now off to bed for the four hours of sleep I get tonight before I have to get up to study for my Roman Civ quiz. When do I graduate again???

Today is an ice day. No classes for anyone. My school officially cancelled classes. Big Jesse’s school did not. We think their reasoning is b/c they have a small student body and most of them live on campus. Maybe school officials never thought that all of their professors live off campus as well as most of the graduate students. Anyway, Jesse made the smart decision. Their is about an inch of ice on the road in front of our house.

The ice started yesterday. I was on my way home at about 3 pm when everyone started braking. There have been several times when I’ve been glad to drive a Subaru (with all wheel drive) and yesterday was one of those days. It was one of those moments when I’m braking and just know that I’m not going to stop in time. But my Subaru didn’t let me down. The weather was just turning nasty and there was no salt down on the roads yet. People were all over the shoulders and wheels were spinning out without grabbing onto asphalt. (And what’s up with all the Midwest drivers? I’m a Southern girl and even I know that you don’t continually brake–even with anti-lock brakes–my dad and hubby taught me that!) I was actually passed by a salt truck. Everyone settled down some then and we all went between 10-30 mph behind the salt truck. I was on my way to pick up Jesse Jr. and a drive that normally takes 30 min. took and hour and a half. And on the side road that Jesse Jr’s school is on (right across the street from Big Jesse’s university) there was an accident. Two college girls on their first day of classes. I’d say that qualifies as a bad first day of school.

I picked up Jesse and the remaining half hour drive took another hour. But I was happy we all made it home safely. And even more happy that none of us have to go out in it today. I’m sure Big Jesse’s professors will understand, if they even made it to school.

I usually like to add photos to my blog posts, but my husband just helped me do a fresh install on my laptop and so all my photos are on the external hard drive and I’m installing a new version of Photoshop (yay) . My laptop feels like a new computer! But to keep things fresh all around, here’s another ‘Funny Things I’ve Heard or Seen’:

1. munch horror – a sub genre of horror that involves many people being devoured

2. helicopter famous – so famous as to warrant the owning of a helicopter

3. “I’ll kick you in the brickles!” – what Jesse Jr. told his daddy (give you one guess what “brickles” mean)

4. “I’m allergic to camels.” – Jesse Jr.
